I'm on vacation... I thought it would be a good time to clean the vehicles... went at them with full hand wash, clay bar, hard wax, mothers back to black and sufficient beer.

8+ hours later... (they should put a disclaimer on the clay bar box about losing 6 hours of your life...)

These Vehicles Are Clean! (except the insides... Don't look IN the car or IN the bike's trunk. Just, please, don't. I feel bad enough without your judgement.)

It's so strange...

I've been obsessing about the F650 GS Dakar for the last week....

I want one so bad

Mine's not a Dakar. But yes, you DO want one. Terrific all-arounder bike.

Light and capable enough to muscle around off road, handles well enough to keep up with your buddies on the sport bikes through the canyon twisites (tire choice is important as to how much FUN you'll have keeping up with them ;) ), comfortable enough to ride long distance, even at 80MPH, efficient and friendly enough to commute on, great brakes, nice seat, comfortable riding position, terrific reliability... you might occasional wish for more power if you're a speed demon, but that's about all I can say bad about it. Oh, and shorties need not apply... I'm 5'8" with a 29 inch inseam and its a bit too tall for me, really... The Dakar is another inch and a half taller.

car's got it. Bike, no. I don't trust slippery stuff on my bike's tires.

Shit. I'm 5'8" also.

But I've never ridden a bike before. I want to learn. Is yours (or something similar to it, I really love BMW bikes) a good starter bike to learn on? I'll probably get on once I become too poor to keep the Fiesta.

Well both look nice and clean. I'm working on convincing the wife that we need a FiST so hopefully soon!

The F650 is a very friendly, tractable, and safe bike, but for an absolute newb, I'd suggest something a little lighter (its 430 lbs wet) and a little shorter (tall bikes are easier to drop accidentally and can be a little intimidating)

Damn that's heavy. And you're probably right, I'm not tall at all. What do you recommend?!! I'm bout to just say fuck it and get a 70's Café racer looking BMW. Because that makes zero sense!

First, take the MSF rider course. Then maybe see if you can find something like the Honda GB 500. Also, some of the older Jap bikes can be tweaked into convincing cafe racers.

Those 70's BMW twins are actually not an awful

choice, they aren't super powerful, they have good brakes for a bike that age, and though they are quite heavy, they have a nice, low center of gravity. Main obstacle is that they are usually not that cheap... the other thing is that the old shaft drive system behaves oddly under acceleration and braking, there's strange suspension jacking that happens, if you learn to deal with it to start its easily managed, but it throws riders who are used to chains or newer shaft-drives for a loop.

I actually saw one of the earlier P-D gs's the other day. The ones with the huge 10 gallon tank, before they went to the non forked fronts. 87-88 maybe? Then I saw one of the later generations 30 minutes later. Crazy.

I wanted to was my stuffs, but I am currently out of beer. It's a sad day.

There's one right near me! I'm still a few years off from learning, but this is good info. That bike looks awesome as well.

Hilariously, the 650 GS is on that list.

But the Ducati Monster looks cool too, and is also on that list.

So many options...

That gauge cluster on the BMW looks weird as hell, like it should have another couple gauges in there. All that blank space...

Another neat choice might the Honda Hawks (NT 650) They are a lot of fun and great handlers.

if you were taller the 650 GS would be a perfect starter bike, and one you could live with for a long time... But for somone who's never ridden before the height can make for nervous learning, and that means no fun...
